The War of Art: Break through the Block and Win Your Inner Creative Battles by Steven Pressfield

Steven P. is not a man who minces words. In fact, sometimes they feel like darts…and I am the dartboard. However, to continue in this metaphor, he usually hits a bullseye. This book focuses deeply on the concept/force of Resistance and how it keeps us from actually doing what we were created to do. Resistance takes on many guises, including some I wouldn’t have expected, and according to Pressfield, the best thing we can do is “go pro.” I can’t explain any more than that for now, because I’m just getting to the section on “going pro” myself.
Simply put, this book will really smack you around. I both love and hate these kinds of books…but mostly love. It’s just my Resistance that hates them.

The Prophetic Imagination by Walter Brueggeman

Though the pages are dense with theological topics that make me need a dictionary next to me while reading it, this book is absolutely fantastic. Brueggeman discusses the role of what he calls “the prophetic imagination,” or rather, the biblical tradition of prophets whose visions for God’s kingdom invading ours pushed forward the story of Scripture, and what that means today. Its emphasis on counter-cultural approaches, and the insistence on the roles of criticism and energy, is challenging and beautiful.

Confessions by St. Augustine

This book and I will be locked in an epic battle for a long time. It’s hard to get through, being as dense as mercury, but I am determined. In all of his bare honesty, he gives me much hope for being a fellow screw-up.
